A Hike Through Wildflower-filled Lowlands

Wendy Hennessy, Health Quest’s Community Education supervisor, is excited for the challenge because she just loves being outside!

“I enjoy hiking, kayaking and snowshoeing – all of which you can do right here locally in the Hudson Valley with an abundance of locations to choose from. For this spring Get Fit challenge, my family and I traveled a little further north to see some new Scenic Hudson parks we have not yet been to on the weekends.

RamsHorn-Livingston Sanctuary in Catskill was one of those new parks. While a swamp may not have the magical draw of a mountain peak or thundering waterfall, what it lacks in grandeur it more than makes up for in the diversity of wildlife it attracts. Plus, as RamsHorn-Livingston Sanctuary proves, swamps can be exceedingly beautiful. A hike through wildflower-filled lowlands, alongside rustling marsh grasses and over intriguing rock outcroppings in its upland forest will linger in your memory long after the boots have been unlaced. It’s great if you are a fan of bird watching and even has a wooden tower like platform you can climb for a 360 view. You can also bring a kayak or canoe. Paddling tree-shaded RamsHorn Creek, curvy as old-fashioned ribbon candy, brings you even closer to the creatures that call the sanctuary home. You may draw the attention of some three dozen varieties of dragonflies, whose wings exhaust the color spectrum. Great blue herons and waterfowl could launch skyward at your approach. Overhead, a bald eagle or two is likely to keep tabs on your progress. And you might spot a muskrat, beaver or river otter.

In other words, while the creek may be an ideal place to “get away from it all,” you’ll hardly be alone. We saw a variety of birdlife during our visit and the kids counted many frogs and fish in the water. The kids love exploring so getting outside is a great way to let them do that.

The Get Fit challenge gets people active, allows them to find new beautiful places and spend some quality time with family — with the opportunity to maybe win cool prizes. I hope to see some new faces taking healthy selfies for the challenge in my travels!”
